Traditional Rug Hooking

Primitive rug hooking is a craft that was born in the 1800’s.  Some think it was carried to America with the immigrants from England, Scandinavia, and Scotland to the English colonies.  It was born out of the need to warm homes by covering the cold, mostly dirt floors and their hearts by adding a spot of beauty.  This is a beginning rug hooking class.  It is not punch needle, latch hook, or locker-hooking as it uses a different hook and technique.  We will make a primitive mat using wool strips.  We will begin with a history of rug hooking, the materials used, cutting the strips, learning how to do the hooking, and hooking your mat.  Finishing techniques will be demonstrated.  At the end of the class you will have created you own piece of history for your home while enjoying the friendship and comes from ‘hooking’ friends.

Instructor: Libbey Lundgren
Instructor Bio: Libbey Lundgren has been a teacher for most of her life. She demonstrated weaving and taught rug hooking classes at the Scottsbluff Valley Fiber Arts Fair. Her journey to become a rug hooker began through her weaving where she met an incredible rug hooker in Estes Park. That meeting lead to the enjoyment of creating rugs and to an adventure that has taken her many places and established a world of rug hooking friends. She is a certified McGown Teacher. She has designed her own rugs, used designs from other artists, dyed her own wool and wool for others, and created antique reproduction rugs using textured wools. She designed and hooked a rug which was displayed and auctioned for the Wyoming Master Gardeners State Convention. The growing number of rug hookers created a need for a group that meets both at the Legacy of the Plains museum and her studio each month. This group was featured in an article in ATHA, the National Rug Hooking magazine. She loves sharing her passion for rug hooking with others. She has enjoyed the beauty of rugs, making a piece of history for her family, and meeting all of the people who have crossed her path through the world of rug hooking.
